It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this commemorative booklet. The pages speak for themselves and illustrate the fantastic journey and progress the School has made since its inception in 1951.
The Governors, the two Hospital Trusts, GOSH and UCH, and Staff have supported us all the way. Governors are instrumental in acting as Critical Friends who encourage and question. Governors helped us achieve Foundation Status in 1995 and from that point we have been free from constraints to lead the School in the best interests of its unique pupils. They have been there to support when times are tough, and to celebrate our many successes.
The Trusts have been instrumental in transforming our accommodation from inadequate and leaky schoolrooms into what we have today: purpose built schoolrooms at UCH and a new Children’s Centre at GOSH.
Many Staff have come and gone and there have been many loyal and longstanding members over the years. The best have served the children selflessly and with utter dedication.
But the recognition must surely go to our pupils. We are proud of the many achievements our pupils have accomplished, with our support, in spite of their medical constraints.
Some of our memories have been sad. We have seen too many pass away too young and we will always remember those children, many who wanted to engage in school up to the end and who taught us more, through their fortitude and spirit, than we taught them.
Most of our memories have been happy, very happy. It has been pure joy to see the awe and wonder of a child’s face as they watch a duckling hatch in the schoolroom or participate in a rowdy pantomime or create a chocolate pizza or learn to read.
How lucky we have all been to serve in this very special school and be part of its journey to our diamond jubilee.
